The plant cell has 10 main organelles. They are listed below with their functions and analogies. The analogy that we will be using is a school.
Nucleus Controls Activities of the cell such as growth. Analogy: Principal who controls activities in the school.
Vacuole Stores excess food, water, and waste. Analogy: Storage room which stores excess items.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Makes proteins Analogy: People making lunch at the cafeteria.
Ribosomes Helps make proteins. Analogy: Items like ovens and toasters that help make food.
Golgi Body Takes proteins from ER and distributes them to the rest of the cell. Analogy: Students distribute their energy to the rest of the school.
Mitochondria Break down food particles and release the energy to the cell to fuel its activities. Analogy: Gymnasium where students distribute their energy.
Chloroplasts Contain a pigment called chlorophyll that helps with photosynthesis (using Sun's energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and sugar) Analogy: Solar panels convert Sun's energy into electricity to run the school.
Cytoplasm Jelly-like material that fills the cell and surrounds the organelles. Analogy: Classrooms fill the school.
Cell Membrane Thin covering and outer boundary of the animal cell. Controls the passage of materials in or out of the cell. Analogy: Main office that controls who comes in or out of the school.
Cell Wall Provides the cell with strength and support. Outer boundary of plant cell. Analogy: Outer walls and doors.
